I found the code of ethics of the Society of Professional Journalists to be very respectable and I feel that all journalists should have the integrity and respect for their profession to follow this code. The code basically states that journalists should be honest and truthful in their work, provide accurate and detailed information to the public, minimize harm, and be accountable for themselves, journalism as a whole, and society. I personally believe that each and every one of the aspects mentioned in the code of ethics is extremely important and vital to being a good journalist. It benefits both journalists and also their audience.
The first section, to seek truth and report it, is most certainly a necessity when being a journalist. Journalists should always be extremely careful and cautious and be sure that they have their facts straight. It is imperative that they give both sides of the story, and they should seek out the subjects of the story to find accurate information and provide them with an opportunity to give their side or opinion of the situation. That being said, journalists must be extremely careful when it comes to sources because they may be biased or not give accurate information, so confirming and identifying the sources and the info they have provided is vital. It is important not to alter facts, quotes, or photographs. Lastly but possibly most difficult of all,Journalists cannot be biased and must put aside their own values, thoughts and emotions in order to get an accurate and true story.
The next part of the code is to minimize harm. This includes harm to the journalist, affected parties such as the people involved in the story, journalism as a whole, society, and the organization they work for. It is important to keep all of these people in mind when writing a piece. Publishing hurtful or disturbing information that could potentially hurt people or get the journalist in trouble is to be avoided. Minimizing harm is possibly one of the most important but very difficult parts of being a journalist. Many stories and events that need publishing tend to have a sad or negative situation involved and therefore it makes it extra difficult and harder for journalists to make sure no one is further hurt by their story.
The last two sections are act independently, and be accountable. Contained in these parts are the duty of journalists to focus solely on the public’s right to know information, and that journalists be accountable to the readers, viewers and other journalists. It is smart for journalists to accept gifts, favors, free things, special treatment or anything of that sort, as it can lead to bias which is unacceptable. Journalists should avoid conflicts of interest and also disclose any conflicts which did occur. Journalists must be able to back up their stories and answer questions of the public. Mistakes should be admitted and corrected as soon as possible.
I discussed this code of ethics in another one of my classes and I find that it is definitely something all journalists should live by. Unfortunately however, I feel that it is disregarded often by many journalists and they do not appreciate the importance of this document.
I believe the code is VERY well written and informative, but sadly, I don't think many follow it too vigilantly. Too many stories seem to be spun and written catering to a certain point or demographic, or just trying to get people to read the article, so they put possibly false headlines to entice readers to read on. I believe all journalists should read and do their best to follow said code, just sadly, I believe few do.
It's easily forgotten that the public must hold journalists and their organizations accountable for ethical practices.
In last year's election, the printed allegation of an extramarital affair between Sen. McCain and a lobbyist, which was unfounded, likely damaged the reputation of the New York Times to some subscribers.
As i did my project on this topic i've already seen these guidelines before and know a lot about them, and i think they're very well organized and thought out. It gives any journalist a clear dictation of how ethics in journalism should be handled.
It goes through specific details and situations so a journalist should know how to handle any situation brought up. The SPJ goes over how to keep your stories accurate, to minimize harm, how to be independent and be accountable for everything you write.
If a journalist had any questions, this would be the perfect place to consult if their stuck in an ethical dilemma. Even though these guidelines were developed many years ago, ethics in journalism is still one of the biggest controversies in the business. Every story needs to be thoroughly examined and sources need to be checked because so many journalists can't be trusted to do the right thing. It's sad, but that's how things still are today. Journalists may report something just because they know it will be very popular and potentially make them more famous, when in reality it never should have been covered or brought up in the first place.
The Society of Professional Journalists is dedicated to furthering journalism by promoting high ethical standards, maintaining the First Amendment, encouraging diversity and inspiring future journalists. This website is a great tool for current or inspiring writers as its resources are endless. My favorite aspect is the section for students. The site offers news, internships, classes, blogs, contests and scholarship offers. In regards to the SPJ’s code of ethics I think it promotes high standard that all journalist should follow. Although the stipulations seem fairly obvious when it comes to following them it is easier said than done. When journalists are in the field remaining ethical sometimes comes at the cost of a good story.
I think The Society of Professional Journalists is doing a great job enforcing the code of ethics because it is important that reporters write fairly on those they may be speaking about. However, I do believe there is a fine line between trying to follow the rules and trying to be different and tackle difficult stories.
The first writers of the newspapers had many rules against them with what they were allowed to write or if they were in fact even allowed to publish anything at all. Although they had rules against certain publications they took a risk! A risk to write what the people needed to know or deserved to know and while the code of ethics seems to be written in order to protect the people we are writing about it can sometime be mistaken for hiding a deeper truth to the people we are writing to.
It seems stories have become more dull, un-impactful, and more monotone then ever before, and for that I blame on the code of ethics. There is a fine line but where do we stop and think ... protect a couple of people we are writing about or protect the millions who will read the article?
After reading the Code of Ethics, I believe I have a better knowledge of what journalists need to look for before submitting or writing something. However, if you really look at it closely there have been times when journalists do not really follow this code. Since we are humans, sometimes journalists overlook compassion for their subject [Under minimize harm].
This is the perfect code for journalists that are just starting to get their foot in the industry.
I think the Code of Ethics is good for journalists to go by. I feel it is especially helpful for those who are new to the world of journalism in that it can help people better undertstand the ethics of journalism.
I think the Code of Ethics is pretty straightforward. However, I believe most of it should be common sense and a given when being a journalist. The main priority should be to get your story, but it is always important to do it in a respectful manner where your reputation and/or your company's reputation is not jeopardized.
When writing a story, i think it is necessary to refresh your memory of the Code of Ethics so you can obtain all the information you need without crossing any lines. The Code of Ethics helps with privacy and some journalistic dilemmas.
As I said before, I believe the majority of the Code of Ethics is common sense. However, if a journalist is unsure of something, the Code of Ethics is helpful to turn to when trying to make an accurate, respectful but still entertaining, story.
The Code of Ethics could not have been presented more succinctly. There is no question that authenticity, accuracy and honesty (including giving credit where it's due) are all absolutely critical when writing a story. One specific instance that caught my eye was "Balance a criminal suspect’s fair trial rights with the public’s right to be informed." At the end of the day, we are all people and all have our emotions and our opinions. When writing a story, we have to remember to check our emotions and opinions at the door, no matter how strong the may be. Even if you believe 100% that the suspect on trial is guilty, you still need to keep your reporting objective. -Hershel Fried
The code of ethics in regards to journalism makes the jobs of journalists and reporters very risky and also painstaking. In order to remain ethical there are so many questions you must ask yourself before you publish any stories. The code of ethics covers very important issues from making sure that you remain unbiased and make sure your beliefs do not influence the angle or position of a story. Also eliminating harm by putting yourself in the position of the person at stake or dealing with an issue.
Ethics in journalism are very important however they do make for a precise process when gathering information from various sources. The last thing anyone wants is to get in trouble or place anyone in a harmful position. The extra work is very tedious but when news is being provided to the public, being extra cautious with your ethical decisions is necessary.
