Every year the Philadelphia Phillies host tryouts for Phillies Ballgirls, and this year nineteen women were picked for the 2009 season. The group of women consisted of a mixture of athletes, coaches, teachers, college students, project analysts, and design engineers.
This year the number of applicants who applied totaled to 1,600+, which almost tripled last year’s amount. Event Coordinator Michele DeVicaris said, “There we’re so many athletic, intelligent, talented women from which to choose, and we believe we selected the very best to represent the Phillies both on and off the field.” She explained that since the Phillies won the World Series in 2008 the number of applicants has drastically increased over the past year.
Although many believe the job entails just working the foul lines at home games. The Phillies Ballgirls also are involved in arranging many different charitable events as well as softball games over the course of the season.
