Meet the Hash House Harriers

Whoever said drinking can't be healthy hasn't met the Hash House Harriers.  The international club better known as HHH, H3 or simply Hashing is a non-competitive running scavenger hunt designed to promote physical fitness and is rewarded in mass amounts of beer.  The Hash House Harriers are "A Drinking Club With A Running Problem."

The H3 originated in 1938 when a group of British colonial officers would meet Monday nights to run off the weekends toxins.  Trails were fashioned after the traditional British paper chase or "hare and hounds."  After hours of chasing the hare and searching for the trail, hashers would reward themselves with beer and cigarettes.

The practice of hashing really started to gain momentum in the late 60's with chapters forming in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and North America.  Today there is almost 2,000 clubs or kennels across the world.

Tampa's Kennel started in 1998 and has been hashing strong since.  New hounds can expect a few false trails, frequent beer stops and a raunchy nick-name.  Competitive running is discouraged and each trek is usually around three miles.  As tradition has it, the kennel is rewarded with vulgar banter and excuses to chug beers.

Don't miss your next opportunity for hashing.  Saturday November 28th the group meets at 3 p.m. and hares leave at 4 p.m. For more information check out Tampa Bay Hash House Harriers
