Phillies RBI League Helps Inner City Kids

The Phillies RBI baseball league created by the MLB in 1993 is an international campaign that was created to give less fortunate inner city kids a chance to play organized baseball. Since the league began, the program has had over 200 cities participate and has had as many as 120, 000 players both female and male tryout.

The RBI league is designed to give kids a chance to play competitive ball while receiving instruction as well as a better knowledge of the game.  The goal is to have boys and girls work on basic mechanics and improve on them during real game situations.

Since the softball program was established in 1995, the league has seen a drastic increase of the amount of girls who have tried out over the years. As a result of this increase, the number of participants today consist of 2,000 teenagers who play in 20 different locations all a crossed the Tri-State area.

In addition to the MLB sponsoring the RBI Leagues, the league also sponsors three All-star teams. The teams consist of a junior (13-15 years) and senior (16-18 years) boys baseball team as well as a girls softball team (15-18 years). These teams travel all over competing in MLB sponsored competitions as well as regional RBI competitions at a chance to play in the RBI World Series held every August.
