We are all bombarded every day with a new fad diet or miracle weight loss pill to help lose weight, but the secret is not in pills or starving yourself, it is in fact eating more, but more of the right foods. Here are some of the best foods you can eat to lose weight. Remember, just because it is good for you doesn't mean you should eat it in excessive amounts. It is all about moderation!
1. Oats & Oatmeal
Many people tend to shy away from oatmeal because they think carbs are bad. Oats, however, have up to 5 grams of fiber which helps keep you fuller longer and they are made from the good carbs which take longer to digest.
2. Kale
One cup of this leafy green contains 34 calories and about 1.3 grams of fiber, as well as a large amount of iron and calcium. But kale's earthy (and somewhat bland) flavor might take some getting used to. Spinach, another nutrient powerhouse, is a milder-tasting option.
One way to make sure you are getting your greens in is to use them in sautees or mix them in with your favorite salads. Even a small amount will help until you get used to it.
3. Eggs
Eggs have had a bad reputation of being high in cholesterol and were never considered a diet food, but that image needs to change. Women on a low-calorie diet who ate an egg with toast and jelly each morning lost twice as many pounds as those who had a bagel breakfast with the same number of calories but no eggs, a study from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge reports. "Egg protein is filling, so you eat less later in the day," says David Grotto, R.D., author of 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life.
Scrambled eggs and omelets are the most common way to eat eggs, just make sure you keep the cheese to a minimum. Another way to eat your eggs is to hard boil them and slice them up on top of a salad. For a delicious Avocado Egg Salad recipe, click here.
4. Steak
Many people cut red meat out of their diets first, but studies have shown that eating red meat in smaller quantities helps to retain muscle mass while working out. Anyone who wants to lost weight but still have a lean muscular appearance should make sure they keep steak in their diet. Try mixing it in with a salad or toss in in with vegetables like kale for fajitas!
5. Lentils
Lentils are know for being high in protein and fiber and low in fat. They help to fight off insulin spikes in your body which creates excess body fat. One of my favorite lentil recipes in Alessi Sicilian Lentil Soup. You can make a pot and keep it in the fridge for a week. It is my favorite soup out there.
