Reflection 6
After visiting with a Times multimedia producer via Skype last night, let's take a closer look at the role multimedia features play in modern-day journalism. Visit the Times and/or some other journalism Web sites and post links to 2-3 quality multimedia packages. Include the link and a 2-3 sentence description. We'll pick a few to highlight in class next week.

Whether multiple photos are indexed with numbers or thumbnail previews, the scrolling photo-gallery is one of the most familiar multimedia components in many websites.

Today there are many different ways to get your news across to the public, and one form that is becoming popular is multimedia journalism.
ReplyDeleteIn this first example, Apple advertises it's new imac computer on it's webpage using a video to inform buyers about its new products features. This is common for advertisers to do, since it involves more interaction with the potential buyer.

Another form of multimedia that is used a lot on sports pages are scrolling pictures. Journalists use images to illustrate important highlights that take place in a game to show a different point of view other than text.

On The Minarets homepage you can find a weekly update video of different news stories and events that are taking place on campus. This form of multimedia delivers a variety of information in a short amount of time leaving the individual up to date with the latest news.

On the WashingtonPost.com, there's an interesting interactive piece on the TV show "Lost". It's an interactive timeline which is a map of the globe with numerous spots marked with pictures which when clicked on talk about events which happened on the show helping people understand what's going on.

A second multimedia news feature on the Tampa Tribune website (TampaTrib.com) is a map of the Tampa Bay area called "find your fun" which is basically a search engine for the tampa area of anything you could want to go to like sporting events, clubs, or movies. It's a helpful tool which could draw more people to use the Tampa Tribune website.

Whether or not it is true journalism or simply a gossip blog, Perez Hilton’s website provides an example of multimedia formatting. He provides interactive articles with links to other pages and pictures, videos of celebs, and countless interactive galleries as well. Each article has links to comments also. There is a video that you can scroll over with your mouse to view the trailer of a movie. There are various different links and parts of his websites that you can click and interact with. His website in general is very interactive and a definite source of multimedia in “journalism”.

Another example of multimedia used in journalism is provided by ESPN.com. There are scrolling photo and video selections. There are many links, pictures and outlets that lead to articles, videos, stats, pictures etc. The entire website is a great source of multimedia in journalism. Here is the link to the page for the NFL section of ESPN.com that provides various uses of multimedia.

The New York Times website provides yet another example of large use of multimedia in journalism. In this specific link, the New York City Marathon is the major topic, and there are links to various articles and videos on the topic. It even says right next to the main picture the word “multimedia” which goes to show the widespread use of multimedia on journalism sites. There is a photo gallery to the right with thumbnail photo links, various article links which are numbered under the picture, an interactive map of the course, and even voice recordings of participants.

When visiting the New York Times homepage, there is an abundance of multimedia topics. After the title of each article, the New York Times gives a little snippet of the article so people know what it is about. Under sports, the website provides a picture of whatever team the article concerns.

For this link, there are constant updates about the game and on the side of the article there are recent posts related to the topic. The New York Times also has multimedia ads that will bring you to different websites about either the same topic or related topics.
There are links to different articles and even different websites on this multimedia journalism. At the top of the page, there is a range of news themes varying from Most Popular, Video, Times Topics Home Page, or Today’s Paper. When you click on a theme, the website gives you many different articles to choose from. For example, The New York Times organizes the Most Popular articles by most e-mailed, most blogged, most searched, and even most popular movies.

Another way the New York Times shows its multimedia on journalism is providing videos on certain news topics such as business, politics, breaking news, and so on. By clicking on an issue, a video pops up and if it is not the video you were looking for, there are other suggestions to the side. This is beneficial because visuals help enhance the story and people become more interested when they are watching the material rather than just reading about it.

On of the multimedia clips from the New York Times is about a car crash in Britain. The girl who was driving nearly sent a dozen text messages while crashing. The video contains interviews with a cop about how there needs to be stricter laws on the use of cell phones when driving. The mother of the girl who died is also in the video. There is a clip also when they show an example of how the crash probably happened.

On the New York Times multimedia page there featured many slideshows and one of them included the New York City Marathon. It had many pictures of the runners during their run, along with audience members cheering them. This marathon was the first time an american man won since 1982.

On the multimedia change I found a link to an interactive graph. The graph showed how Americans (over the age of 15) spend every minute of their day. You can easily scroll your mouse to one of the activities (eating, working, traveling, sleeping etc.) and it will tell you the percentage of Americans doing that activity at a certain time.

Sun&Fun is a multimedia package in the Tampa Tribune. It is an entertainment guide for people who are new in town. It consists of an interactive map of Tampa and when you click on the red dots it shows cool things to do around Bay area beaches.

Water Polluters Near You: Coal-Fired Power Plants is a multimedia package in The New York Times. The article is about how even though coal-burning power plants have reduced their air emissions; many have created another problem, which is water pollution. The NYT created an interactive map created with information from the Environmental Protection Agency to show all polluters near certain areas.

HBO Cube: The Affair is a multimedia package on the HBO website. This cube shows four different sides to a story (four differed videos) and not until you have seen all four will you know the entire story. HBO did this to have people experience a story in a whole new way.

National Georgraphic's website has an extensive archive of videos - I picked this particular one which is set in Manila,Philippines.

London's Olympic Park Progress - www.guardian.co.uk. This an interactive multimedia that allows us to click on different locations and look up the history as well as see how far construction has taken place at a particular point.

This is another interactive that takes us on the history of the internet [from when it first started 40 years ago] this one is really intereseting as there are different stories from viewers as well as videos along the way.

They're Hiring!
ReplyDeleteAt CNN.com I found an interactive guide to six young and progressive companies that are hiring. You can shuffle through the companies with a scroll button that reveals a quick bio about the company and the positions open.

The second interactive news piece i found was created by Gabriel Dance's co worker and it shows a glimpse of a few new yorkers lives. Each week a new bio is added to the "one in 8 million" showcase showing the diversity of passions and problems facing the average new yorker.

On Foxnews.com there is an article about the H1N1 vaccine and how the US received 10M more doses of the vaccine. With it there is an accompanying map of where there doses are being shipped to in what parts of the US the map allows you to scroll over a particular state and see the numbers.

At CNN.com they have an interactive trivia game called CNN challenge that changes week to week. It quizzes you on specific topics that have been discussed in the news.

Seeing as we spoke with a member of the NEw YOrk Times staff, I decided to dig deeper into the paper, and see what other multimedia hi-lights I could find. These were the top three that caught my eye:

- The mayoral election too place on Sunday, and seeing as many candidates are of the third party/ relative unknowns. The times offers a quick background of each candidates name, party affiliation, and recent controversies surrounding them, as well as their recent accomplishments. This is a link that can help many undecided voters make a somewhat informed decision on who their vote should go to.

The title of this piece was “The Art of Rock & Roll”. From Jimi Hendrix, to Bob Dylan wandering through an almost desolate street, save for a few children playing, to the Ramones, to Amy Winehouse laying in her bed (possibly pleasuring herself?) These photographers captured moments in musical history that can never be replaced or compared to any other musician’s rise to stardom. These are not just Rock stars of past and present. These are generational icons, and a site format such as this can help educated younger people of a rich cultural heritage in our country, as well as the rest of the world.

I like this package because it explains a music video beyond the end result. It shows how much is put in by the producer as well s the artist. I find hearing from them directly while watching it is efficient in ways only a visual can be.
